Fellows, Birmingham, 20 April 2015
Sold for £1,008
2016 marked the 20th anniversary of the launch of Omega’s Speedmaster Racing watch collection which was inspired by the brand’s then star ambassador, Michael Schumacher. In 2005 he had secured his second World Championship title and would go on to win five more – making him hot property as timepiece promoter. Schumacher is said to have had a hand in the design of the Racing series, which was available with either red, white or yellow dials.
In 2007, Antiquorum sold the actual watch presented to Schumacher during the model launch (which took place in his home town of Kerpen, Germany) for Sfr 51,920. The caseback was engraved with the words: “To Michael, time flies. From Omega.’ This entirely standard model sold at Fellows for around £1,000 was good value, not least because we believe the racing models – though relatively plentiful – have all the makings of future classics, especially in mint and boxed condition (which this one wasn’t).
