Glashütte Original updates the Sixties Iconic collection with a new square chronograph in stainless steel
When it comes to rifling through the archives for inspiration, Glashütte Original favours designs from the more recent past. The Sixties Iconic collection launched back in 2015, and the German brand has now updated it with the addition of a square chronograph.
The Sixties Iconic watch is based on the Spezimatic, a 1964 model manufactured in Glashütte by GDR-owned enterprise VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe, or GUB for short.
Now, the Sixties Iconic comes in a 41.35cm x 41.35cm stainless steel case, with pushers at 2 and 4 o’clock. The addition of a squared case is something that Glashütte Original did with its Seventies collection, introducing the Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date at Baselworld 2014.
Being in possession of its very own dial manufacture in Pforzheim means that Glashütte Original can have some fun with the dials – remember these opulent Sixties models? The new square chronographs thus come in a rainbow of graduated hues: from crimson to deep blue to forest green.
There’s also an interesting orange dial that Glashütte Original is calling ‘tangerine’: whilst all the other dials are given the ‘dégradé’ finish by a final spray of black lacquer, the tangerine version’s initial galvanic coating in gold receives a layer of both black and red lacquer, giving it a fiery finish.
All four of those dials have a sunburst finish, whilst a stylish dark grey version is stamped into a filigree pattern by a 60-ton press.
Twin sub-dials sit at 3 and 9 o’clock; although not quite as stripped-back as the Spezimatic, numerals are sparse across the whole dial so you can really admire the lacquering. There are numerals in a rather unusual font at 12 and 6 o’clock.
Inside is the automatic Calibre 39-34 chronograph with a 40-hour power reserve and, of course, the traditional German striped three-quarter plate.
Each one is priced at £6,400, and 25 versions of each colour will be launched on either a brown or black alligator strap.
